KSVR-FM is a non-commercial radio station licensed to the Board of Trustees of Skagit Valley College, funded with a combination of support from the Associated Students of S.V.C. and Student Services of S.V.C., with staffing support from Day-Academic Department and Student Life Office. Starting in 2006, KSVR is funding a half-time position with money from the federal GEAR-UP program, to provide opportunities for skill development to youth, and also provide outreach to parents about education opportunities for their children. KSVR also receives financial support from individual & business donors, providing for additional staff and facilities support. KSVR is involved in training young people at college, and community volunteers, in producing radio programs, and providing opportunities for airtime. KSVR sponsors legal information workshops for the immigrant community regarding naturalization and immigration paperwork. KSVR is one of only several full-power college and community in the Northwest to offer programming from the Pacifica Foundation radio network, with KSVR planning to celebrate its 10 year anniversary with Pacifica in 2007. KSVR has been an affiliate of the Satelite Radio Bilingue network since March 1997, bringing news and information to our Spanish speaking communities, and becoming a network for families and friends sending messages to each other around the country through the 40 outlets for the network. Listeners from California, Texas, Washington State and other areas call in during music programs to give dedications and acknowledgements. ![]() ![]() The mission for KSVR has 3 major components: ...to provide a variety of viewpoints not easily available in mainstream media, which conveys information and news to the community that will help them to form decisions in their lives; ...to provide access for students and community volunteers for training to produce radio programming that is meaningful to our audience; ...to reach local populations which are underserved by conventional media in our area.
Honoring its mission statement: KSVR offers large blocks of public information and news programming, in English and Spanish. The volunteer staff is composed of about 45 community volunteers year round, and depending on whether the college is in session, also about 15 students. The Operations and Traffic is shared between a part time professional and a student. That includes the daily log pages, the EAS compliance, and the PSA/promo scheduling. The Music Library is managed by djs and students. The Underwriting/Membership/Fundraising Coordinator is a half time professional. The newest member is a full time Spanish Program Director to lead the Spanish speaking volunteers, develop new programming with a focus on outreach to parents of school children, and help develop a significant Spanish language news offering. The Community Advisory Board meets several times per year to make recommendations regarding programming direction and staffing goals. Diversity at KSVR Just look at the staff picture at the top of the page! We do not have representation from every culture or background, but we have open doors. Our present paid and unpaid staff is about 75% Latino. ![]() Please visit our schedule: Link to our program pages to find out about the wide variety of resources offering diverse and challenging content!
